These are simply a list of addresses I have been sent on various occasions by various sources I have by no means contacted all of them. Fees may be payable and some will be unsuitable for many circumstances but remember that one thing leads to another and the cost of a stamp may get you a vital lead. There are
a few web links as well to get you started.

There are a number of organizations who collect information on people and or have resources they can use to help, IF THEY WILL.

Now here is one you will see a lot if you are looking for a Military person. To use this 'as with most you must do it by post' (I'm a poet and didn't knowit) and for this one you need a special form known as The Standard Form 180 Which they will send you. and, as with all government or military sources you need the patience of a Zen Buddist and a couple of extra life times helps. The thing is that lots of information is still on paper and it requires someone to go through it all to find what you've asked for.

If you contact some of these I don't doubt that you will accumulate even more addesses many of which will be usless with out information  or money. I am looking for an ex US Serviceman so I called around a few local Air Bases and spoke to the Historians they gave me many of the ideas I have used.

WHAT ABOUT THE INTERNET THEN??

Well the Internet is great for putting up messages and registering your quest details with any number of organisations. You can go to your search engine like Yahoo or four11 and type in reunion registry or veterans forum etc and get access to all manner of helpful stuff some want money some don't, you can look at Government sites but that's usually all you can do. The thing is a lot of it only serves to make you feel better. By all means use all of these facilities they could pay off but don't stop your own investigations I use the web to look for specific things Military group reunions or people I know might help. The thing to remember (for me anyway) is that my subject will be over 65, so, how many 65 year old Internet users do you know?? The chances are if you've tried all this stuff by now anyway.

I found the email search on four11 good because you can supply a domain ( the bit after the @ ) lets say you want to contact personnel at a military base but have no email address well if they have a Web Page you can get the email domain from the webmasters address. then do a search on four11 for any name in that domain and up pops more email addresses than you can shake a stick at. You can use the Internet to contact people in this way to try to get help, but be polite and brief to start with and don't badger people if they don't respond. Also send one at a time to any given organisation imagine how people would feel finding out that half the organisation is helping you.

Don't direct your search directly to your subject unless you have the information you need to do so. Why? well because one person is a very small target it is better to aim at all the people that your subject my have touched in his/her life. It's like the difference between shooting at one flying bird with a 22 or firing a sawn off shotgin into a flock of them.

And don't forget, if you get the chance to help others try to do so. There are lots of good people out there! these days the only view many of us get of each other is from behind the wheel of a car, a very poor view point in these bussling times. Here's a few sites to get you rolling. Good luck
